Scooter insurance: insurers are adapting

In recent years, the scooter has invaded the urban landscape and has become a means of locomotion to the popular mode of youth but also active tired of suffering daily traffic jams in large cities. One is tempted to put the drivers of scooters in the same category as the bikers, but their respective philosophy is far from being like: it seems that bikers are more aware of road hazards, even if the number of deaths and injuries bikers still higher. But the fad has become what the scooter alert associations and insurance companies that are seeing a significant increase in accidents.
The scooter, a means of locomotion for young people? Not only because it follows a study released by AXA that the average age of the scooter 46 years! This is far from the image of Italian scooter with a pretty girl who sells the product or young cities that share in his rear wheel with gear. 46 years, 86% male, middle management, rather, the driver type of scooter is married with children and owns a car. And 73% drive a scooter to get to work.
The survey also shows that driving scooters are more dangerous than other two-wheelers. 41% believe that scooters motorbikes increasing uncertainty. A feeling more widely purchased by 57% and 58% of motorists bikers. With 2.5 times more accidents than other two-wheeled scooters represent a growing danger to their users: a two-wheelers sold in 5 is a scooter, and the 125 cc AXA represent 40% of new contracts two-wheelers.
Aware of the dangers of driving a scooter, users would like more preventive measures against them. Since January 2007, any motorist holding a Class B license must undergo training for 3 hours to drive a 125 cc for the awareness of the specificity of the two-wheelers and their dangerousness in the absence of special training. In 2008, 5,091 people were injured in a motorcycle accident and 72 teenagers were killed. Failure to respect the rules of the road remains the main cause of accidents, handling of the equipment which allows to slalom between cars and light running causes the potentially dangerous decisions. In addition, the scooter drivers is not a fan of motorbikes as may be the biker, it often fails to adequately protect themselves with helmets and clothing.
Insurers now offer insurance products specific to scooters: liability insurance is mandatory minimum guarantee, but it is strongly recommended to add additional safeguards to be properly covered as collateral damage to the driver and the security damage damage materials. Once the liability coverage, some insurers offer insurance see the helmet ownership of certain safety equipment (apron, bubble). It may also include security theft / fire, scooters covered many flights. Many companies offer training courses.
Still, the legislation is rather mild in terms of responsibility scooterists: young people who have no driving license usually take the SSB, road safety certificate, yet it is very controlled by the police. Many associations but also insurers require the establishment of a genuine license that empowers young and old users of the scooter.
